CLARITY is a worldwide group of lawyers and interested lay people. Its aim is the use of good, clear language by the legal profession. We hope to achieve this by:
  • avoiding archaic, obscure, and over-elaborate language in legal work;
  • drafting legal documents in language that is both certain in meaning and easily understandable;
  • exchanging ideas and precedents, not to be followed slavishly but to give guidance in producing good written and spoken legal language;
  • exerting a firm, responsible influence on the style of legal language, with the hope of achieving a change in fashion.
We:
  • publish a journal, 'Clarity' ;
  • sponsor international conferences on plain language;
  • run seminars on legal drafting;
  • operate an email news and questions service for members.
  • give informal drafting help to members and others;
  • introduce plain language lawyers to each other and to those who need their services;
  • accredit plainly written and well-designed standard documents;
  • award occasional prizes;
  • hold breakfast meetings in London and Hong Kong;
  • co-operate with other organisations.
A fee is charged for the items shown in italics.

Although most members are lawyers, membership is open to anyone interested in legal and official language. As a group we operate in English but many members work in other languages.
